Time settings

By ifeanyin ·
I have a netware 4.1 installation. Actually that was the first I installed Netware 4.1.
Any time I boot the server the date defaults to 1988. the time and the day is correct but the year is 1988.So I have to unload timesync and set the time every morning.
The netware is in a network with an NT4.0 server and I live in Nigeria, West africa. What do I do.
Thanks

First I would boot to DOS only and check the time there. If the time is wrong there, try to reset it in DOS then boot to DOS again to see if it retains the correct time. Maybe this is a hardware Y2K issue.

Just one curious question, why do you need to reset the time every morning? Do you reboot your server daily, or does it actually change time back to 1988 while its running?
Is this the only Netware server on your network? If not, check your timesync settings and other servers. Also, maybe another silly question, but are you powering down your server, or just downing then restarting the server? You will need to power down, as DOS time will freeze while Netware is running.

The first answer raised a good question. Are you restarting your server daily? Keep in mind that NetWare optimizes itself over time, so you're actually better off to leave it up as long as possible.

If it is Netware 4.10 you will need to patch it for Y2K. Go to support.novell.com and download all the latest patches for 4.10.

One thing I would check first is the BIOS of the server hardware itself. Find out what kind of server you have and check the vendor of that server for any Y2K patch/fix you may need. I beleive that time sync is based off the BIOS date and not a function of the software. The fact that the date resets to 1988 each time you boot, may indicate that the hardware bios may need an update.
