Tool to know if a network drop is hot

By johnd101web ·
Is there any tool (voltage reader, LED activator) out there or something I can build , so that I can walk up to a wall jack and test and see if the drop is hot. It's frustrating having to go back to my idf's to see if the drop is hot. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Test-um LanScaper $300
Fluke Networks LinkRunner $500

These units will verify live cable drops and much more....

verify dhcp, power-over-ethernet, ping,

blinks link light of switch so you can figure out where it is patched in.

Test-up does cable testing and tracing too.

I requested a tool of this nature from my supervisor when he came around and asked for a "wish list". Unfortunately, cost was prohibitive for us at that time, and I was told "NO. not at this time". I ended up using a laptop... if the laptop picks up an IP, I know the port is live. Like you said, it's easier than running to the controller/server room to verify the port.
