The easiest way to move your email and contacts would be to do a search on your old hard for Outlook's pst file and move it to your new drive. Everything is contained in that file.

For your McAfee, you should be able to reinstall it on your new computer and enter your license number.

My find files&folders didn't find a pst file. But I have Outlook Express so maybe that is why.

For Outlook Express messages, the location of the files depends on the version that you are running.
For OE6 and W98, my mail files are stored in the folder;
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Identities\{string}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
{string} is a long alpha-numeric string assigned by OE when it installs.
If W2K is like XP, your mail files will be under your identity in the documents and settings folder.

The OE files all have the extension .dbx
There is one .dbx file for each folder in your inbox.

You need to manually export your address list from within OE to transport it to the new PC.

Once you copy the .dbx and address files onto a CD, or the new system hard drive, use the Import option in OE to import your saved messages, and your address book.

As to McAfee, I download the latest XDAT or SuperDat file from their web site, along with the appropriate patches.
Then, re-install from the CD, and install the patches and latest engine and DAT files.

McAfee just introduced version 7 of Virus Scan. If you are using version 5, this may be a good time to upgrade.

Outlook Express 6,0 says the folders are located at documents & settings/administrator/local settings..... - but I can't find a local settings folder - I have searched for it and I have looked in "My Computer"

Your local settings folder is hidden. You'll need to go to Tools => Folder Options => View Tab and select "Show Hidden Files and Folders" and uncheck BOTH "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files". You'll then be able to see the Local Settings folder with the Administrator Documents and Settings. Copy that Outlook folder to the new computer to keep all the settings that same.

The answer above with re-installing McAfee and re-entering your serial number is correct. I wouldn't try to move any anti-virus product simply by moving the folder or registry entry. Most antivirus software doesn't just use one folder or registry entry on your system. :-(

Hope that helps!

Sorry, I had a brainfart and was thinking of Outlook (not Express). You can find your Outlook Express storage folder by opening Outlook Express, go to the Tools menu and choose Options. Click on the Maintenance tab and then the Store Folder button. This will show you where your current storage folder is located. It will depend on your operating system setup. As stated in the other posts you will have a dbx file for each folder you have in Outlook Express. Take these folders and copy them to your new machine (locate the new machine's storage folder the same way).

Enjoy,

You may need to go to tools prefferences or settings in Windows Explorer, and set the switches to allow you to view hidden files and folders.

You can also search for *.dbx and find the files that way.

Did you find the tool in OE to export youraddress book?

It is on the menu at File / Export / Address Book In OE.
You could also use the option to export your messages.
