Transferring files to new computer

By mclean5 ·
I heard that there is a USB 'program' that would enable me to transfer files from my old laptop to my new laptop with relative ease. Does such a thing exist? Needless to say my expertise is not in computer technology! The question is simple, however the need has tremendous value!

First, you need to make some form of connection between the 2 PCs.

You can use:
Serial data transfer cables
Parallel data transfer cables
USB data transfer cables
A CAT 5 cross-over cable.

Just make sure that the cable is wired specifically for data transfer.

If your new laptop has Windows XP on it, just run the files and settings transfer wizard, and your files will be copied.

Otherwise, you can use a number of different utilities.
One is "Lap-Link".
It allows you to browse both hard drives from 1 PC and copy files as desired.

For freeware tools, check out www.nonags.com

Many times, you can buy a complete solution that has the cable and software bundled together.

Hi,

Regarding USB specifically, there are USB solutions that are simple and reliable. CompUSA for example sells a USB kit (the USB cable and software). All you have to do is install the software on both machines and attach the USB cable to both machines. When you run the software on a machine, you'll see two windows (much like explorer) and you can drag and drop files and folders from one machine to another. The beauty of this solution is that if there's some data you don't want on the old laptop you won't "automatically" have it transferred.
Also, you'll probably find a lot of USB options at a website called USB everything, which is located at, http://www.usbeverything.com

I hope this helps.

There is also a software program made by Aloha Bob called PC Relocator. We've used it successfully to transfer files and in some cases programs from one PC to another.
