Trashed Fat with HP devices and Netscape

By tlsnc ·
I am reposting as I did not intend to close the problem.
I have been fighting with a Windows 95B system since Jan. I have managed to identify the programs that are "fighting" but can't resolve the conflict. System is on a 5 station peer to peer network using a 3Com NIC. It has HP scanner and 4000TN running jetadmin. This configuration has been working for over 18 months. First problem to show up was that the printer was not recognized. A reboot would fix that one but it did not stop there. The only thing that had changed was an upgrade from Netscape 4.5 to 4.7 (currently it has 4.73). This would happen every time Netscape was opened more than twice to check email without rebooting the machine. Within a week a reboot would produce .vxd errors for Netscape. Once into Windows, a check of the HD would show no files there. I ran scandisk and it found e

Trashed Fat with HP devices and Netscape

Looking at the last part of your msg, it seems Netscape 4.7 gave you some real troubles, so i suggest the following :

1 - If possible, attach the damaged HD to another machine and try to read it.
2 - If you can read it, remove any Netscape files, run Scandisk and check for errors.
3 - If you can't read it in another machine, you have another two choices, either a) your data doesn't matter or b) your data is important.
If a) :
- fdisk /mbr
- fdisk --> rebuild partition
- format
- reinstall OS, programs, etc...
If b) :
- Check with some local PC repair shop the chance and $$$ of recovering your data, then resort to a).

I hope it helps

Hi! Not a nice problem you?ve got..
Perhaps some of theses tips could help:

1.Seek if the disk exists in the BIOS-setup. Change a parameter for ex keyboard repetition rate,,save the changes..Sometime it helps to stir around in the bios to relocate the drive. (How old is your battery?)
2.Mount the disk on another computer.Try to find it there...
3.In the original computer do fdisk /mbr from a boot-floppy. To retain a good drive.

4.If these things do not help..hrmm then....

A. Get hold of a another drive,, partitition it, format and so on.. place it as a new master drive,, install your OS.
B. Take out your ?broken? master drive, change it to slave drive,,give it a spin on the table, and then place it in a freeze-bag in the freezer for an our or so.
C. Take it out of the freezer,,mount it in your computer. Start the computer, and hopefully it finds the drive, starts your OS, and then you have a couple of minutes to backup your data to the healty drive...

Hope You have any luck with this.. //

Gee, another "oldtimer" who knows the spin & freeze tricks. Drive still boots just complains about missing .dlls etc. This drive is OS only thank goodness. Data on second drive, but thanks for trying anyway.

if you can bring the machine succesfully on the network, share its drive and try to access it from another machine,

You know I couldn't help but notice that your message stated that you have been working on this problem since January 1st. Have you made sure you have the latest BIOS releases as well as software patches? You may have a y2k issue. I would upgradenetscape to the latest release. I use netscape and have not had the kind of problems you are explaining.

I have seen this problem before. In that case, it also involved those versions of netscape. I am interested to know what hardware you have or what brand of pc it is.I was able to get the machine to boot to recover data by booting to a floppy and running a thorough scandisk. after telling it to go ahead and fix/delete the cross-linked netscape files, I was able to make it boot and recover my data before re-partitioning and formatting the disk. It wasn't pretty. I was not able to continue exploring the problem, but I was left wondering if the problem was with HP's motherboard/BIOS, a bad hard disk, or netscape's fault. I suspect it was something to do how the bios handled Y2K.
