Tree or server not found

By VE7YME ·
I am running Netware 5 on a server ianelementary school. The client is 3.40.0.0 and is running on P-II's running Win98SE.Thess are connected through a D-Link Switch to the server room. Here is the problem. When the computers in the lab are started up they connect to the server no problem, but if left at the login prompt for more than a few minutes or after being logged out, the error The tree or server cannot be found comes up when someone tries to login.

Try eliminating the switch from the scenario (move a pc closer to the server eliminating the switch) and see if you still have the same problems. If you are able to eliminate the switch as being the problem through this test then you know that the physical part of the network is ok and can proceed with further troubleshooting.

Check the power settings for the PC's. make sure they are not going into standy mode, and that they are not turning off the NIC. Either event will cause the systme to disconnect from the network.

Your nick might have a power save mode. To check the setting:

Right click Network Neighborhood ==> Go to "Properties" ==> Right click on the ethernet network card ==> Go to "Properties" ==> Click on the "configure" button ==> click on the "Power Management" tab

Make sure that "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked.

Do you have SLP (service location protocol) setup if you are running IP? that may be the reason you cannot login. If you are still using IPX, then make sure the switch you are using is not filtering out SAP broadcasts because SAP need to advertise the GNS (get nearest server) packets to respond to client logins.

i recommend you check for any running application, and close it. if that is not the problem go to network neighboorhood novell client for windows property and type the preffered server ip address, and the name of the tree
