Troubleshoot Windows

By PianoM79 ·
Working on the desktop is fine and typing memos. Able to get on the internet but once on, it counts down 60 seconds and then shuts off. Is it a virus or something else?

Its a worm, more than likely, the Sasserworm.
Get yourself the fix from microsoft from windows update and make sure your antivirus is up to date.
You will probably need to download the Stinger tool from Mcaffee or a similiar tool from symantec to remove the worm from your system.
If its not the Sasser worm, it's the Blaster worm....I would bet it's sasser though....Good luck!

Well, I don't think it is a sasser worm unless it was back around August of 2003. Sorry I did not clarify that. I will look into it though. If you have further suggestions, please let me know.

If not a worm or virus, it could be your CPU fan.

Many systems monitor CPU temperature and fan speed.
If either gets out of limit, the system shuts down.

The Blaster worm came out July 27, 2003.
Do you have the MS03-039 patch that prevents Blaster infections? Sometimes Blaster (or one of its variants, like Welchia) only crashed the local RPC service, causing the 60-second shutdown, INSTEAD of doing their full infection routine.
So, it could be Blaster that you need to patch to prevent it from doing this. It is still very much out there on the Internet, scanning for targets.
