I have 11 computers conneted to a linksys switch and that switch is connected to a linksys BEFSX41 router. Once maybe twice a day the one compter is bumped off (file server). It hase to be rebooted before the network will see it again. Sometimes I have to turn off the router to.

Some questions before we can provide a decent answer.

Are you using static IP addresses or DHCP? If DHCP, provided by router or server?

How many client licenses on server?

Server and client OSes?

As I read question, only 1 of the 11 PCs has this problem. Is that correct? Provide particulars on IP setup for that PC.

I'm thinking that it may be a DHCP lease/renewal issue but need more information.

This could be caused by using a dynamic ip on the server which is where will comps questions would be handy.

When it fails and while it is 'down', try some basic testing. can you ping itself or the router?

It could also be a cable issue. A short for example. You may think a reboot is needed, but it may be some other intermittent issue. I would test the cable run to be safe.

Make sure the server is static ip.
Try a new patch cable from the server to the wall, and from the patch panel to the switch. I would also try a different switch port.

The fact that 1 of 11 fails makes me lean towards the cable.

Good Luck,

razz

Do you see anything in the event log of the file server?

Also, when it is down, check to see if the server service is running.
