Trying to connect 2 locations to server

By JeffryG ·
I am trying to figure out what sort of service to choose for a simple 2 location network less then 5 miles apart. The main location will have: Server, Desktops & Terminals. Working on windows server OS, using MS Access Database, also requiring Internet access for all users. The second location will be working from the Access Database on the server, along with 7 desktops & 7 Terminals also requiring internet access.
Now I am trying to decide bewteen DSL (But am unsure if terminals & desktops from remote location will be capable of performing this) or ISDN w/ Internet Access?

No equipment has been purchased yet, so any references are gladly welcome.

Trying to connect 2 locations to server

A lot of this depends on how these two places hook into the Internet. This is an ideal situation for a small VPN. You can get a couple of netscreen 5 devices and set up a tunnel between the two locations. An extra added benefit is the Netscreen also functions as a dynamite firewall. So essentially, you'd have each location with its own ISP connectivity (DSL, T-1, what have you), with the Netscreens providing a virtual tunnel.

Alternatively, you can crossconnect through the local phone company relatively cheaply. Check with the phone co. for your NPA-NXX number at each location; tell them you want to make a T-1 or Fractional T cross connect and see if both locations wire into the same Central Office. If so, it'll be about as much cost as a business xdsl connection, with the extra added benefit of, it's essentially a remote connection for your remote office, you can firewall/control/monitor one connection, there's no messy domain issues with some cients being in this IP address range and some in *that* IP address range, etc.

Hope this helps.
