Two files are hanging the system on Win9

By monyhunter ·
I work as tech support for one of the many HP sites. I have a user that uses an Omnibook 900 with win98. He uses a docking station at work and then uses the system and home to dial in via a DSL line.
When he boots his system at work he has two files that are not loading. One of them is MPREXE and the other is MSQSRV32. I was able to find info about MPREXE on technet. It stated to rename the <username>.pwl file and then reboot and relog into the network to create a new password file. I did this and the system still hangs when loging on the network. I could not find ANY information one the MSQSRV32 file that was not responding.
If I use the end task utility and end the two files the system will hang and has to be rebooted.
Since this is win98 the user can escape past the login and use the system but he is not connected to the network.
Any help would be great!! The user runs a docked and undocked profile and has not problem unless he is logging into the network.
Thanks

It's possible that when DSL was set up on his laptop that the 2 files were corrupted. And since he's not able to connect to the network, it might be worth looking into reinstalling the network client (you didn't mention what type of network). Goodluck.

As far as MSQSVR32.EXE, it's the message server application. Here's a page that discusses MSQSVR32 errors that may point you in the right direction:

You have to update Internet Explorer. Version 5 or 5.01 is available through the Internet. That fixes this problem. If you're running Symantec's Norton Antivirus, update the virus definition, too. Go to symantec.com.

Enjoy!

The correct file name is Msgsrv32.exe. Search on TechNet for that file name. It has a number of functions, including playing startup and shutdown sounds, and reloading (and starting) Explorer. Extract a new copy from your Windows98 CD to c:\windows\system.

To monyhunter,
If you want to know or find information about MSQSRV32, go to the help file, troubleshooting section, startup/shutdown topic and you will see it right there.
Now if you want to know which file really hangs the machine, go the C: andlook for the file Bootlog.txt, open it and all he way at the bottom, you will see entries like
Termminate=user or
end terminate=network
or whatever else you will see that most likely causes it.
Anyways, if you will follow the solution it gives there, you may come across of the right solution or perhaps you need to update the win98 you have=connect to the ISP>then start>windows update>it will lead you to of course Microsoft>click product update>startup/shutdown, download the self-extractingfile and most likely your headache is over.
