unabable to reinstall after Klez

By datchison91 ·
I used Norton SystemWorks. Despite that, Klez escaped quarantine. I have used the repair tool and verified with three different virus programs that the virus is gone from my computer. However, even using Symantec's instructions, I cannot reinstall and use NSW, Act, and MSN. I am still getting error messages. Will reformating the disk be of help?

unabable to reinstall after Klez

I had 1 workstation that caught Klez over a network share from a sister company. I ran the Symantec cleaner tool 3 times, did full scans with Mcafee (with updated DAT files), scaned the Registry manually for any additional entries, and disconnected it from the network.
And it STILL remained infected.
So, I had to format and reinstall. Luckily, it was only a workstation.
It has been a couple weeks now, and no problems.
So FDISK it, FORMAT it, and start over if you can't shake it. It worked for me.

Among other things, Klez can also damage the Windows OS kernel. WHen this happens, your system is cooked. FDisking and formatting are then necessary.

I've had to clean Klez off of client's computers about 6 or more times now and every single one has been successful. Make sure the repair tool is being run in Safe Mode, you turn off your computer for 30-60 seconds after cleaning it, and whatever else Symantec has put out in their instructions. If you don't follow them precisely it's probably not going to work. Also, make sure that you go to folder options and show all files and folders when looking for wink**.exe. You can format your disk all you want but you shouldn't have to. NSW should reinstall with no problems even if you haven't uninstalled it because Klez tries to hit the AV programs first. MS Office is second, it will put null characters in your registry so that no Office programs will work. As far as McAfee goes, I haven't seen it stop Klez yet. Thanks to McAfee I'm making some pretty good money these days.
