    Unable to access safe mode

    Locked

    by jdowds ·

Its like this. I recently installed the following programs: ShellOnV2, Litestep and I also installed an anti hacking tool kit. All of these programs came from a magazine (PC Format UK) One of the anti-hacking programs prompts me for a password just before windows loads. but the main problem is this. when i load windows ShellOnV2 is meant to open allowing me to pick my shell, it does not open. On pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL the close program window shows ShellOn as running. I was told in the magazine (PC Format UK) how to rectify a problem with the ShellOn. Namely on loading, access safe mode, go to command prompt and edit system.ini. The problem is,m since installing this anti-hacking toolkit i am unable to access the options. I do not know the name of the anti-hacking program in question but i think it contains the word “red”.
I am unable to use my start up disk to access the command prompt as it has an I/O error.
    Please help

I also have this to add.
Is there anywhere that I can get a start up disk or some thing else that allows me to access my command prompt

If you are using Win98 set boot from the CD rom and access the .ini file from there. If not, boot using any boot disk and get to a command prompt. From there you can access the hard drive and the directories.

Did you try pressing F8 during boot up? That puts you into the boot menu where safe mode is one of the options.

If that does not work- you have a problem. If your computer can boot from a CD, (check your BIOS for that option) you can put the windows CD in and reload windows.

Let me know if these do not work.

The Boot menu allows you to boot to a command prompt as well. You can also try the step by step boot up option- You may be able to avoid loading that software so you can fix the problem.

Finally, If you can get to windows, you can make a boot disk by going to:Control panel–add/remove programs–Startup disk( click on that tab).

        Good luck!.

I’m assuming hitting F8 and selecting safe mode isn’t working…

I would try would be to boot into dos and look at the system.ini and look for a line that starts with shell= and change it to shell=explorer.exe and then try to boot info safe mode.

Try the f8 key. If you still can get in, reboot with a boot disk and delete the antihacking file from the windows directory.

You may have a hardware problem.Check to make
sure your bios is set correctly then shut down your machine.Disconnect your hard drive
and see if you can boot your machine with
your floppy. If it boots ok then you will
know that your floppy drive is ok.Your “boot
from floppy” may be turned off in your bios.
if you manage to boot your machine from a
floppy and your hard drive is back on line,
use the fdisk /mbr command at the DOS prompt.
Your master boot record could be messed up.
      Good luck.

Short the motherboard battery to the case for a few seconds. This will override any previous settings and should allow you access to the BIOS. The shell program you are using can’t prevent you from entering the BIOS as the BIOS has control prior to the other program’s execution.
