Unable to load any web page or FTP

By Quarlles ·
When I open IE or Netscape on Win98 se I'm unable so load any web page at all. When I insist, IE or Netscape shuts down and I get an Illegal Operation error. On the other hand in a DOS prompt window, I CAN ping any web site using either the domain name or the IP address. Ftp doesn't work either. This PC is able to log on the network and has no problem browsing the LAN. This is the only workstation that has this problem. Please help!!

What kind of error are you getting?
What IE are you using?
Did you try to upgrade the browser to a newer version?

Under Add/Remove program click on IE and select Add/Remove button. There is a repaire IE option.

We would nee more info to help.

Good Luck

Where I work I have had the same problem with IE and page fault on 98 machines. I tried everything to solve the problem and I could not.

The only thing I can suggest, which did work with a 98 machine, is to reinstall your operating system. Onceyou go through fdisk and reinstall the 98SE operating system, update your IE to the latest version before doing anything else. Once this was done on a 98 machine I never received a page fault error for that machine.

Again, Good Luck!

I recently nuked a 98 machine and reinstalled the operating system. The first thing I did was updated the IE browser to IE 6.0, and it worked fine. No page fault :-) This was a major problem for me until we got rid of all 98 machines which made me happy because the error was driving me crazy.

See if you can find a way to manually uninstall everything dealing with IE and then try to update it to IE 6.0. Make sure to download the install first before uninstalling IE.

I have a strong feeling that I have found a solution for your problem. I was trying to install a program on a 98 machine, and I received this error "Error Number: 0x80070725 Description: Incompatible version of the RPC stub."

I thought I would fix this error by running Windows Update. I was nervous because all of the 98 machines gave me a page fualt error, and I never solved the problem. I was right it did not work.

So I researched my other error on google, and came across a solution for my 0x80070725 error. I replaced the corrupted file like suggested. When I installed the new file, I notice that it installed a file relating to my page fault. I got excited because I thought this may help me with my page fault issue. I was right. It did, and now I am able to run Windows Update.

Here is the link to the solution that worked for me. I hope it helps you.

The error that I get is the usual "this program has preformed an illegal opreation and will be shut down". The details it gives are "IExplore caused an invalid page fault ..." It uses IE 5. Also it won't let me upgrade the version since it wont access the Internet at all. I tried to repair it but still no results.

Sorry for the lack of info.

This sounds remarkably like a firewall issue I once had. Have you or have you ever had a software firewall on this machine?

It can't be a firewall problem, there is no firewall what so ever anywhere on the local machine nor on the server.

I had a problem like that before. The way I fixed it I had to redo windows. The problem happens when you have more then one browser. I had AOL installed by some older software and it knocked out the Explorer and Netscape. When I reinstalled Win 2000I started to install all the software and after 10 programs and updates over internet I had installed again the bad program and it screwed me up again. You have to figure out what software might cause all the confusion in a system. I know you can fix the problem by copying some of the files to IE, but you must have the IE 5 or greater on a separate disk. Another solutions if you don't want to redo the whole system go to one of the FTP over DOS and download Optra browser I believe that this is independent software and it's not using the same .dll files, because it worked on my system.

I cant get ftp to work in DOS either and I uninstalled Netscape and reinstalled IE 5. It would be better if would not have to redo the machine.

If you have another workstation just like it, swap the hard drives to determine if it's hardware or software. If the known good drive doesn't solve the problem in the bad machine, then it's hardware of some sort (motherboard, memory, or CPU). If it's software, try deleting the entire networking setup & reinstalling it. Right click <My Network Places>, click <Properties>, and delete all clients and TCP/IP. Reboot, and reinstall them. You may need to reinstall IE & Netscape too, but hopefully not!
