Unable to save files to UNC

User tries to save a file from within Word and gets an error that he is unable to save. User has sufficient rights to the foler. After some digging, I noticed that Word attempts to save to UNC (\\server\vol1\path) rather than to mapped drive letter. Browsing through Network Places to UNC won't let user in to further than the \\server. When trying to access \\server\vol1, user gets permissions error. He is OK to browse via mapped drive though.
Two things, I'd guess:
1. Why Word is trying to save to UNC and how to change its mind to save to drive letter
2. Why isn't user allowed to save/browse to UNC in the first place

1) Well, that one's tricky, never heard of that before. You might want to check and see how the drives are being mapped in the login script. Check and make sure their syntax is right, ie. MAP ROOT instead of MAP. It is possible if you use windows to map the drive and not the netware login script that it could get a little weird, haven't tried it myself.

2) In Netware 5.1, before Native File Access Protocol, UNC was a little fuzzy. I can't go into huge detail except to say I wouldn't expect UNC to work with 5.1 at all.

So basically, if you did not install NFAP and it didn't come in one of the more recent service packs, don't expect UNC to work.

I will second the previous comment of having the drive mapped from the Windows system. This seems to resolve most of the issues.

Is the share location mapped as a hard drive mapping or is it being reached by a search drive?

The problem lies not in the way the drives are mapped but rather in Word itself or, perhaps, a client32 software. User of this PC don't seem to be able to connect to UNC, even if admin is logged-in. So, the problem is two-fold:
1. How to force Word to save to drive letter
2. Why can't PC browse via UNC

Error was fixed by applying SP2 for client32 v4.9
