Uninstall AOL

by Fred Gordon In reply to Uninstall AOL

Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, highlight AOL and hit the remove button. This uninstall program should take out all AOL files and registry entries. If there are any shortcut icons left in the SysTray or on the desktop, right-click and delete them. --Fred

Which version of AOL?? America Online is notorious for it's v5.0 program which makes all kinds of changes to the internals of the OS. A normal uninstall will NOT work. If this is your problem you might uninstall but then have problems connecting to another provider. If this is the case let me know and I can provide more info. (they got sued over this, I think)

There are several programs that Add/Remove Programs will not remove correctly. I personally use Norton CleanSweep. It will monitor the install and record everything that the program changes. Then when you uninstall the program with CleanSweep, it removes the whole program. Also with Norton Utilities, there is a great program that will find left over registry entries, shortcuts, etc. You can both of these programs in a package called Norton System Works (around $50) which also incudes Norton Antivirus and Norton WebServices. Its a great program to use to keep left over "crap" from programs from piling up and bogging your computer down.

The only way to do a clean uninstall is to purchase a third party software, which is unreasonable.
Go ahead and do a format of the hard drive and this will be your only option to clear AOL from the system.Donot click the AOL button after reformatting. It will not delete from the registry either.
