Unknown or Illegal alias:myname@mydomainname.com

By sanjana8480 ·
We have one mail server hosted into our company with MS Exchange 2003, our domain name called mydomainname.com has been modified with new one i.e. newmydomainname.com. So I modified recipient policies (E-mail Address Policies) in MS Exchange server to *@newmydomainname.com.
Now some users have problem receiving mail.
We have been reported by some of our clients that they receive the following error: -

?sanjana@newmydomainname.com (5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: sanjana@newmydomainname.com)

Original- Recipient: <sanjana@newmydomainname.com>
Action: Failed
Diagnostic-code: smtp; 550 5.1.1 unknown or illegal alias: sanjana@newmydomainname.com
Remote-MTA: 194.170.0.118?

Note: our MX & PTR records are perfectly well. it is pointing out to our mail server with the IP address of our firewall.
One doubt I have which is when I do the Test Mail Server (under Diagnostics) on www.mxtoolbox.com,
It shows me
Rev DNS Check: OK - 213.XXX.XXX.XX resolves to mydomainname.com

(Pls note this domain name is my old domain name which has been modified to newmydomainname.com)

Can any genius let me know this can be the problem we are not receiving mail from some yours or any other is the problem?

well you say your DNS records are fine

by CG IT In reply to Unknown or Illegal alias: ...

but the error message says they are not.

eg dns check IP address 213.XXX.XXX.XXX resolves to mydomainname.com when mail is addressed to user@<newdomainname>.com

If this is Active Directory, did you change the domain name using the administrative domain rename tool Rendom? This rename tool does not rename Exchange, there are steps to do this , [xdr-fixup]

Thanks a lot for your precious reply,
Yes, the above said IP is resolving to my new domain name i.e newmydomain.com, meaing the mx records are well. See the output I get from www.MXTOOLBOX.COM on MX Testing:-

Meaning it gives me correct PTR on the first test but on other 2 test it resolved to my old domain name i.e. mydomainname.com. The error is coming for this reason only or other?
Is it really necessary to change the active directory domain name from mydomainname.com to newmydomainname.com?
Since we have this problem from some of the domains not from all domains.
Kindly help me in this matter.
I really appreciate if you can do anything for me.
Thanks & best regards,

well what DNS server are these queries sent to?

by CG IT In reply to Unknown or Illegal alias. ...

The test results appear to come from the authoritative DNS server for the FQDN as both IP addresses that the name resolves to are routable addresses.

If these are the authoritative DNS servers of your domain registar and not your internal active directory DNS server, check your internal DNS server for a zone <newmydomainname>.com. Both your authoritative and your AD DNS servers need to have a DNS zone for the domain name.

In Exchange, you'll need to set it up for the new domain name and new Storage Group as well as GAL, recipent policies etc.
