Unkown File ~

By DonaldWDube ·
I support a small office network of machines running W.98 and a couple of laptops running XP. I keep having a file named " ~ " appear on the desktop of one of these machines and it recently appeared on one of the laptops too. This file is 197 KB in size.

We are running Norton Antivirus and the virus signatures are updated weekly. Norton doesn't identify this file as a virus. But if I delete it it returns within a couple of days. We use a dialup ISP and do a lot of email. Can someone tell me what this file is and where it originates from and how do I get rid of it permanently.

I too was very troubled by this file. If you open it with wordpad you'll notice that all your email addresses are listed in the text. Each letter in the address has a character between it. But anyway this is a backup of the email address file or wab. The backup is normally in the same folder where the wab is stored "C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book". The backup is called (usersname.wa~) But after installing update patch (330994)for Outlook Express the file named tilthe(~) started going to the desktop and other places. Anytime changes are made to the address book the file is also updated or created if not there. Microsoft admits this to be a problem a nd is working on a fix. You can safely delete each time but then you won't have a backup of the wab file. This is what I did. I put a dummy copy of my addressbook in a folder and then copied the ~ file there. I haven't gotten the file on the desktop yet. That's been a month or so ago.
