update on com port not closing

I tried all the suggestions that everyone gave and nothing worked. I went into control panel and removed modem and all com ports, into bios and disabled com ports, I installed a new modem, nothing helps. The only thing I can do is after every modemuse, I have to remove modem from control panel and restart the computer so it can re-install modem.

I can sincerely commiserate, as I am having trouble with my modem. Could you kindly resubmit the problem, and then I (and others) can think of some more solutions.

RNAAP does not close down automatically when I disconnect. The only way I can dial in again is to either reboot or use CTRIL-ALT-DELETE and end task for RNAAP.

Do you have any infared software or hardware installed on your system, check the infared devices and see if it is working properly

I’m not sure what answers were proposed at first but here goes. Take the modem out of the machine, reboot the machine without the modem and make sure you have removed all traces of the modem software, drivers etc, from the machine. Shut the system down completly. Boot and go in the bios settings, disable com2, let it boot and then shut down again. Put the modem back in machine and let the system plug-n-play it back in. test to see if it fixed the problem.

      Good luck…

Thanks, this was the closest that I have come to getting it resolved. Windows 98 now recognizes my modem. The only problem I still have is that when I disconnect and try to reconnect at a later time, I can’t do it unless I first hit CTRL-Alt-DELETE and end task for RNAAP.

      What is your port type?
      Uart 8250/16450/16550/1150
      What is your modem type?

      Hi,

I missed the original post but if you have any CAPI drivers installed for an ISDN modem,
de- and re-activate th CAPI drive if you can.

Check your MFC42.DLL version and try a different ver. if you have one.

Disable the RAS if you have adial-up server
      installed.

Disable auto FAX answering if you have it.

      CU,
      Glenn

Check the addr. for modem, try setting it to a new range. Chances are your are having a conflict with the modem that is non-detectable with 9x. Shot in the dark, it’s a voice modem. If this is the case check the Sound card, this will cause an error EVERY time. Second thing to check, Does your MotherBoard support IR, not just do you have an IR device. The IR Systems take up an addressing for a Com Port, Disable this in the BIOS- Even if you don’t have a device attached. Third, Check addon cards, was was the last device before this you introduced to t he system, chances are that may be the device your having the conflict with. This error/issue is one reason I will not buy a Voice Modem, or one that is software driven (they do the same thing). If your sound is not onboard, the cards like the same space due to the sound features. Try adjusting the Io & Freq if these do not work, I suggest you try a diffrent modem borrow one & check to see if the one you have may have some defect. Good Luck -al

if the modem and the sound card are ISA, then what i would try is a PCI modem.

MAKE SURE MODEM IS INTALLED ON PORT 2-4. IF THERE IS A MODEM HELPER ICON IN YOUR SYSTEM TRAY, RIGHT CLICK ON IT AND TELL IT TO EXIT OR GO CTRL ALT DEL AND END TASK FOR ANY MODEM SOFTWARE, DIAL-UP’S ETC, ALSO END TASK FOR RUNAAPPIF ITS THERE. ITS EASIER IF THERES THE SYSTRAY ICON BUT THE CTRL ALT DEL METHOD FOR COMPLETELY CLOSING YOUR MODEM IS STILL EASIER THAN WHAT YOU’VE BEEN DOING. YOU ACTUALLY SHOULD BE ABLE TO CLOSE THE PORT BY RESTARTING IF ALL ELSE FAILS RATHER THAN REMOVING AND REINSTALLING.

Tthat is now the way they I am getting it to work. I just don’t understand why I have to end task for RNAAP everytime I finish using the modem. It used to work fine when I first got the computer.

I too had this problem. This is what steps I took.
1.) Remove all the drivers and all references to the drivers and modem.
2.) Installed the origanal modem drivers (that came with the modem, not the win9x drivers)
3.) Downloaded all patches from Microsoft form Windows.

This solved my probs, hopefully it’ll solve yours.

I’ve run into this problem on two different machines. Both times I tried everything. Finally replaced the modems. That solved the problem.
