Updating from Window 95 to 98

By da1857 ·
Recently I updated my operating system from Win95 to Win 98. I have a SCUSI card which was recognized by Windows 95. Now that I have done the update to Win98 it keeps saying that the adapter card I have is USB and wants to set up the USB card and a USB Root Hub. Is it possible the I need updated software for the adaptec SCUSI card? Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks

You may just need to update the drivers for the card to be recognized by WIN98,that is the only reference to software that is needed.Go to the manufacturer's site and download the latest drivers.do a manual install,by going through the device manager.
Start>Settings>Control Panel>double-click on the system icon and select device anager tab.
Hope this helps.

Remove your SCSI card from the Device Manager and restart Windows 98. It will recognize your SCSI card as such and will ask for its driver if it doesn't have one for your SCSI card, and resources will appropriately assigned. So have the driver for you SCSI ready. A new one would be great but not necessary at the moment. Have the Windows 98 CD available, too.

Enjoy!

During the upgrade process, Windows is notorious for adding multiple devices. Definitely get the new drivers from the manufacturers web site. Instead of removing the devices in normal win98, go into safe mode at start-up(F. Remove the devices in safe mode. Check all the other devices as well. You may find more devices than you bargained for. Remove duplicates so when you restart, 98 will do the pnp installation and should prompt you for driver location.

Knowing which model Adaptec card and the version of Win98 you have would be helpful. But in general the steps listed in the other posts should be good starts. Also I would recommend updating the FLASH BIOS for your motherboard and any motherboard related pathes/updates for Win98 (if you have a VIA chipset motherboard for instance their are several updates for resolving IRQ assignment issues and enhancing the IDE bus). Sometimes underlying issues such as these can cause Win98 to "misidentify" PnP devices attached to the system. Also by making sure all the core components are stable eliminates the possibility of more than one problem combining to create the symptoms you describe.

I would first check the windows help files and then the files of the manufacturer. Also, try looking for new drivers.
