Upgrade to XP from ME

By randerson7 ·
In Trying to upgrade to XP from a troublesome ME, after formating the drive, I can't run setup. It says that this program cannot be run in DOS. What has to be done to make this changeover to XP on this ME box? The system is a Pavilion with 60 GB HDD and 512 RAM. Should I be booting with a ME floppy or XP? Does the BIOS need to be upgraded? Thanks for the help!

In addition to what Paul wrote, is that the XP setup will check your hardware. The result will let you know if you need to upgrade the BIOS.

To know more about if you hardware is compatible go to http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx

If for any reason you cannot boot from the CD, you will need to download a utility from Microsoft that creates a boot floppy set.

There are 4 different versions of the utility, so make sure that you get the correct version for your version of XP.

There are links at www.bootdisk.com
and www.madboot.com

If you can't boot to the CD go here and download Windows XP Home Edition Utility: Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install.
File name: WinXP_EN_HOM_BF.EXE

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=e8fe6868-6e4f-471c-b455-bd5afee126d8&displaylang=en

As always copy and paste with no spaces.
