My way is to backup everything. Change out MB and if works, fine , if not , full format including MBR and reinstall all. This way for sure no rag tag registry. no conflicting drivers. fresh start on all. I keep everthing backed up that is important as HD's do fail as well as many other components. It is always a trial and frustrating as heck to try to get a system to boot to do backup you should have kept up on.

When upgrading a mother board, backup all your files, if you have the compressed service pack 1 on your machine back it up. (Saves you downloading it again for XP) Wipe the drive and reinstall OS. It's really the only way to guarantee that you do not get any faults, and a smooth running system. Replacing a MB from the same manufacturer with even 1 different component has potentially lethal effects on your OS.

Hi Matt, if your user name is a valid e-mail address, I will send you the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles on how to move a W2K or XP installation to new hardware.
(the articles are no longer on Microsoft's site)

Basically, Microsoft recommendsthat you backup the system, perform a clean install of the OS, and then restore from the backup.

For W98, what works most of the time, is to enter device manager, and remove ALL hardware before shutting down the old system for the last time.
What you are doing, is stopping Windows from trying to load drivers for hardware that is not present.
