USB device won't work/not found

By CherOhkee54 ·
I have a scanner that requires USB hook-up. When I load the software my computer won't recognize the scanner. I checked device manager and I don't see my hardware listed. I do get the yellow exclamation point for the unrecognized device. There are no hubs listed under the USB controllers. I have a digital camera that I'm having the same problem with. I've never used USB devices on this computer. It's an HP Pavillion, WindowsXP home, 500MHz, 256 RAM, Intel Celeron.

Start by entering BIOS setup at boot, and verify that your USB ports are enabled.

If they are enabled, make sure that any connectors from the USB ports to the motherboard are connected.

Check with HP for a BIOS update that SPECIFICALLY corrects problems with the USB ports.

It didn't help me simply because it's beyond my capability. I'm sure that it is a good answer, but for someone that has knowledge regarding BIOS settings.

Have you tried installing Service Pack 1 for XP?

This I can do. Updates for Windows is an easy fix.

Goto ADD/Remove hardware, and add the USB Root hub, from the specify the device yourself option.

That's the problem, can't find the hub. There is nothing listed under USB controller. Nothing loads from the CD that came from the hardware....

go to the hp website and get the latest drivers for your motherboard specifically the usb controllers and reinstall them. That may correct this problem

HP's site is a maze of, well, for me confusion. I'm sure the answer is probably there somewhere, but I can't see it.
