Use a Dynamic as a Static

By dtomandl ·
Hello,

I work for a small company, we recently purchased a server with MSSBS, I want to setup the exchange server, but I do not have a Static IP. I have a DSL line, but the owner will not OK the switch to a Static IP. Is there a way to use a dynamic IP as a Static IP? Any help is greatly appericated!!!

Darrell

I dont know of a way, but if there is, I wouldnt think it would be very reliable. I wold really try to convince the owner, that if he wants email and if he wants his email to be reliable, he is going to want to move to a static IP. Stress that it will be good for future projects as well. Website, FTP site, ect...

Im not sure your budget, or what the owner wants, but I believe that Verizon DSL with a static IP is only like $80 right now. Getting lower all the time.

you need dynamic DNS service. http://www.constanttime.com is one such service.

Or you could run your own dynamic DNS service.

note with a dyanamic DNS service, all that is happening is that when your ISP changes your public IP address DNS resource records for your domain name are dynamically updated with the new IP.

Thats it.

here's a link for constanttime dns service that works I believe. If not try this service

http://www.directupdate.net/register.html

I've used both. Constanttime was $20.00 USD per year and directupdate is like $25.00 per year USD.
