Using 98se to dial into Xp Pro machine

By mnan2004 ·
I am trying to connect two of my computers together. I want to connect the first computer which is running 98se to the second computer which is running windows xp pro using dial up. Both computers are physically next to each other. Can anyone please give me detailed instructions on how to do this. My goal is to be able to share files, play games and to share the internet. Any help would be much appreciated. Thx

Why do you want to use dial up networking if both computers are next to each other?

In order to use dial up networking, each computer needs it's own unique phone line.

In your situation, your "best" and "easiest" option would be a direct cable connection using a USB data transfer cable.

The next method, would be to have network adapters in each PC and use a cross-over CAT-5 cable between them.

For the USB networking, there should be a CD and instructions with the data cable.

A decent source for networking details and tutorials is

A couple of quick notes:

The Workgroup name needs to be the same on both computers.

You will need to enable file sharing on both computers in order to share files.
I recommend creating a seperate folder and storing the files you wish to share there.

If you have a firewall installed on either PC, you will need to set permissions to allow the other PC to access the PC.

Here you go:

Purchase network cards for each computer if you do not already have them installed. Purchase a crossover cable to connect the two machines with. on XP machine Go to control panel > network connections and right-click on your dial-up connection to the internet. click on advanced and share this connection. On 98 machine go to control panel > network > change tcp/ip properties to get IP address dynamically (DHCP). Restart both machines. Share a directory on each machine by r-clicking on it and selecting sharing (and security). You can now share files, internet access, and play tcp/ip games together. The XP computer will now give the 98 machine an ip address that it can communicate with.
