Using MODEM causes Win2K to restart

By jfonz ·
I am currently trying to configure a new Trademark PC loaded with Win2K to use a Motorola SM56K MODEM. After the MODEM is installed and a dial up connection is attempted, the system reboots. There is a message that is generated on a blue screen that indicates that there has been an error for which there is no error handling.

Have you checked Microsoft's compatibility list? Point your browser to: http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/server/howtobuy/upgrading/compat/default.asp. If it is listed, then you may have to find a modem that is. If it is listed, make sure that you not only have the latest W2K drivers for that device installed (check the mfr's website) and ensure all Windows Updates are installed including current service packs and critical/compatibility updates.

You may also want to try another slot. It's possible there may be a short or the device is not appropriate in that particular slot. I've experienced similar issues in W98 and XP and swapping slots is the fix. Just a thought.

Hey, check on Motorola site for a update of drivers. I have also had a modem do this. In which I had to flash the modem and then load a new driver for the modem. Best start is to look on thier web site first.

Thanks for the input. It turns out that the problem was a compatability issue. I happened to find a section in a Windows 2000 power tools book that advised to stay away from winmodems. I found out that when the modems were purchased, the cost wasaround $10 a piece. Well, when I went out and bought a decent modem, it fired right up. You get what you pay for.
