Sounds as if the Backup Media is faulty

by HAL 9000 Moderator In reply to VERITAS NOT BACKING UP O ...

If it fails on one backup set of media but runs on another.

If you are still using the same media and it's working you have a software problem that is occurring on the initial backup run and is only fixing itself when it asks for the previous weeks media.

If the Tapes are not adversely affected I would try reinstalling the software and see if that fixes the problem and failing that ring the makers to see if there are any Known Problems with that software and the latest 2003 Patches. As this is Tape have you tried cleaning the heads recently?

Sounds like the job is falling over to a second tape

by DMambo In reply to VERITAS NOT BACKING UP O ...

If the job is falling over, it fills tape 1 and needs tape 2 inserted to finish writing the BU data, then it needs tape 1 back during the verify process, then tape 2 back to complete verify. You can cancel verify to avoid having to re-insert tapes (Job Properties >Settings >General)

Since you want archives, overwriting media automatically doesn't sound like an option.

Why not do a full backup once per week and a differential backup the other 6 days? In this case, you only need to reference a maximum of 2 jobs for a full restore, but you'll be writing a lot less to the tapes on the differential days.
