versioning software recommendation

By steffeno ·
Anyone knows of a 3rd party software that can do versioning of files. Meaning if one person edit a particular file and another person is editing a file, it can track who edited the last file. Any suggestions is appreciated.

Generally spoken, you'll need developer-oriented kits for this. The market leaders are:
* Merant PVCS
* IBM/Rational ClearCase
* MSoft SourceSafe

They do what you ask and much much more, of course at a price.

Well I've tested PVCS in a lab, and yes it could handle all file types. In production, we are using PVCS only as a single instance and have built our own multi-server shell around it - but that was because of limitations it had 5 years ago, now we might not have done so anymore.

thank you for answering. but before i close this discussion and give you your ratings, have you used Merant PVCS personally? Right now i am looking for a versioning solution for ISE design tools from XILINX and ADS(Advanced Design Systems. But i was wondering if the Merant PVCS is generic to file types or products. So in the future there isnt' a need to purchase another versioning software. Thanks for answering. Cheers
