Virtual CD drives

I'm currently using CD space and it does the job well once you've loaded all the SW. It appears to be affecting my system though. For short (<10 hour) operating periods, it is okay but anything beyond that and it can take up to a minute to do any kind of interactive action (mouse click, enter, etc.). I've looked at some of the new CD server technology but is very expensive since you have to buy the actual server to get the SW. Is there any kind of an easier option to have my kids games run from the hard drive vs. the CD so they don't have to keep switching them in and out? I would imagine that this is the option set by the developer but would also image that there is a way to tweak those defaults. And, to anyone who would use this todistribute illegal SW - no this is not the reason why I am asking. For anyone with young children, you can understand why you don't want them flipping CDs in and out of your system.

After loading all those CDs onto your HD, how much free space do you have left? Some of those games use incredible amounts of memory and you may be running out of room for your swapfile.

I have an 80GB hard drive with about 50GB remaining. Main question I had though was on how to emulate the CD ROM drive or modify the programs so I can change the default location of the CD ROM drive it is looking for.

Have you thought about using Virtual CD? Many of my friends have been using it and I have not heard about any slowdown associated with it.

Hope this helps,
Ray

We are getting closer. My big question would be - how can you modify the CD itself to not look to the CD drive? More than half of my kid's games can be loaded right onto the hard drive and run fine from there even over a network. The others require the physical CD to be in the drive. Does anyone know how you could modify the CD so that it does not require this? With monster hard drives coming out, I have no problem putting all of their games on my PC and removing the clutter of CDs that they have to switch in and out.
