Virus affecting Word and Excel Files

By lmcdonald ·
We got hit with 3 viruses and they all appeared at one time so I do not know for sure which one caused the problem. The excel and word files on some (not all) of the USER folders on our Novell server are not accessible. Whenever I (or a user) tries to open a word or excel document that is in a particular (about 7 users) user folder an error comes up saying that the file is in an unrecognizable format.

The 3 viruses we were hit with were w32.sircam.worm@mm, w32klez.gen@mm and w95.hybris.gen.

Does anyone know how I can fix the files? I ran the fix for sircam but it only runs on a c drive (not a network drive) which is where the virus was detected anyway (I don't think it is the culprit anyway). Unfortunately one of the users affected is the President and then the bookkeeper. All of their month end files are on the user folders (mostly excel).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Wow! All 3 at once! You have my sympathy.
Here are URLs on the 3 viruses; please read them all:
SirCam- http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.sircam.worm@mm.html
Klez - http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.klez.gen@mm.html
Hybris - http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/w95.hybris.gen.html

(please remove any spaces in the URLs)

The XLS files might just be corrupted beyond all repair. Restoring from backups might be your only solution. The CodeRed infection especially does strange things.

Sorry.

Go here:

http://www.claymania.com/f-prot.html

Download version 3.12. Make sure you get the latest definitions, too. It's a DOS app but will let you scan network volumes. And, I hope you have a good backup.

If your anti-virus programs haven't removed the actual virus, a program such as Panda Platinum will do the trick, without destroying the file. They even have a free online version (one time) at http://www.pandasoftware.com and a downloadable trial version that will scan any drive/mapped drive you wish.
If the file(s) was disinfected by a program but was corrupted in the process, there are several file recovery programs albeit not very inexpensive! You can find links to these on www.zdnet.com in their download section. Search for "Excel file recover" or something that is pertinent to your requirements. Another site that has recovery programs is www.dtidata.com which has more professional programs and links to other media/file recovery information.
