Virus Identification

Which is the best virus detection & identification utility for the pc repairer to have in his kit? All advice & opinions very welcome. (Remembering that sometimes it is not possible to load Windows)

There is no "best".
No antivirus program can catch all viruses.
I have had to use as many as three different ones before the virus was removed.
Three for starters, Norton, McAfee, and Trend.

If Windows cannot be accessed then can the Norton,McAfee,or Trend packages be used still and if so would the latest AV definitions be useable. Normally when Norton, for example,is installed on a system the updates can be downloaded onto that system and will then be run with the application. Can Norton be used, with updates, to check a system where a.Windows cannot be accessed and b. where the Norton product was not installed on the faulty system?

I have been using McAfee and Norton but i will no long use McAfee due to the fact that on numerous occasions the virus would infect McAfee and keep it from running... McAfee would comeup with a message saying its infected by a virus and cant run butin using Norton i NEVER had that problem and used Norton many times to repair and virus infected pc that had McAfee on it to begin with.

All Antivirus programs can be run from a floppy.
Make sure the PC is set to boot from A:
Insert floppy.
Turn on PC.
Follow instructions.
I have experienced viruses that wipe out Norton.
(Variants of Monkey.)
Again, you will need more than oneAntivirus program.
This is not a problem, because antivirus programs are cheap. (Relatively, compared to most shrinkwrap software.)

The best is ViRobot Expert from Hauri (www.haurtiusa.net). It can actually repair the damage caused by over 15,000 different viruses. There is a white paper at http://www.brienposey.com/kb/Anti_Virus_Software.asp that compares ViRobot to Norton, McAfee, and Trend Micro in head to head testing.
