Virus- no display

By techgirl75 ·
Okay,
User told me he opened an email from a friend and downloaded an attachment and as he says "a million windows started popping up" and computer shut down. Now when he restarts the computer sounds like it is booting up but no display on screen. No option for anything. Just blank screen. When I heard that i thought virus. Hod do I fix this problem? This is his home computer. Thanks.

start with a couple bootable floppy disks. use one to see if c: is still there and still working properly with files etc. if you can access mark the diskette as possibly infected and try running an antivirus package. you can download mcafee's off the internet or purchase a cheap version of nortons antivirus and run with that.
good luck

Okay, start by disconnecting hard disk, cdrm, any additional cards but video and check if video comes up. If it doesn't try a different video card or same card different slot (if possible you'll only have 1 agp or onboard video thats when you need the other video card). Validate the monitor is ok on another machine. It's possible the computer had a power surge and fried the video
card or the motherboard may be damaged. I keep that old spare 486 with all the cards laying around just for cases like this that come up from time to time to give me something to test things in.

not to likely but check monitor cables for good connectivity and if the monitor is no longer good replace monitor.

Do you have power? start backing everything off the pc down to motherboard/cpu/ram/video and see what happens. Reseat all cards and try again. Make sure the motherboard is not touching the case with its' sodder points. Make sure all fans are running including cpu heatsink fan.

Theres a possibility of a power surge having burned out the motherboard or one or more of the components.
For handling that you'll need to test each piece on another machine. Be forwarned damaged cards can damagemotherboards and anything else in the system. Don't let them sizzle and fry to long.
Good luck

First off is the end user using any virus protection?

If so have them no update it.
If not why not?!?!!?

If still not repeat to top of message until virus software has been updated. Ok lets continue.

AFter virus protection is updated.... do a full scan.
Knowing this I hope you read the virus manual and
booted with the floppy the antivirus program came with.
Also If you are in the Maryland metro DC area I can help fix this for free. First time always free second time I ask fo payment.

Ok so lets go on.
Did the software fix it? If so great.
If not fully then you will need to backup and perhaps format. A computer that has been patched up like a band-aid = a slow computer. Once it truly has been cleaned do a scandisk then download System Mechanic from www.iolo.com and check the registry as well and delete junk files.

Ok if after all this your computer is still a black screen then perhaps you better download the virus trojan cleaners off of Symantec website.

But ifyou did not go this far and did not buy any Antivirus software then I have little hope for you.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. There is absolutely no video on the monitor. None. There is no command prompt, no POST, no Windows screen nothing. Computer sounds like it is running but no video at all.

Do you hear any beeps durring bootup?
After you try some of the stuff here and if still no luck. Try resetting the BIOS. Follow the instructions from the Mother Board book or remove the battery for an hour or so. Also some Mother Boards will reset if you hold down END key while turning the PC on.
