Is anyone out there trying to decide whether or not to take the big plung and
switch to Voice over IP ???? Has anyone already made the investment ???? My dept. have been trying to decide for a few months and have had many discussions and vendors involved with this project. Is the technology there yet ???? Do any of you have a PBX that is useing the VoIP technology ????

I think the technology is there and reliable from what I have heard. I think it is a given to deploy with a VPN rather than Internet however. There are quite a few companies buying into it (Dow Chemical, Barnes Aerospace, Key Corp.) and they seem tolove it.

I’m in the process of integrating a Cisco VoIP solution with a Lucent Difinity PBX. w/o going into alot of the details there’s one thing I MUST tell you. If you do go for VoIP…go full force. Interoperability between PBX and VoIP phones leaves some to be desired. The specific issue I’m stuck on is a group pickup option. At where I am avalability is key so voice mail is not an option. Basically, I’ve been told by several of Cisco’s AVVID teams that it cannot be done. That is, being able to pickup VoIP phones from PBX phones and vice versa. I’m sure there are other caveats that fall into this area. At any rate, they say that future CallManager releases will include this functionality but until then…I’m stuck.
