VPN Client

I am trying to connect to one of our customers through Cisco VPN client 4.6.00.0045. When I try to connect through our DSL connection I get thr following error "reason 412 the remote peer is no longer responding". However if I modify the profile to connect to the internet via dial up I can login and connect. My dial up ISP is not the same company that provides my DSL. I'm new at VPN connections any ideas as to what the problem is?

Well if you are usung a router on your DSL connection it might be the firmware or configuration on that. I have a Linksys router that needed a firmware update before it would connect using standard windows VPN. If you only have a straight to DSL modem connection, there is the possibility that something is blocking it in the DSL modem or through that ISP but seems unlikely. Im not familiar with the cisco client but I'd make sure that there isnt an option to look only for a dial up modem or such(i doubt this but thought id throw a shot in the dark). If its conneting through the dial up and not the DSL i'd say its probally not a PC setting since VPNs usually are just looking for an existing internet connection regardless of type.

In short double check your DSL configuration or settings on router if that exists. Check ISPs or router's FAQs for more detailed help on their site.

On your DSL firewall, check and see if it is set to enable IP Sec passthru. Most Linksys have this enabled by default, but some may not.
