want a non-microsoft os.

I want to make server on linux.
& want to do virtual machines whose os is linux which i can use as a file server, mail server, proxy server. I want help OR idea for this. Can anyine help me for these.?

If you want to build a simple file server, proxy server, mail server etc etc. I would simply just download a copy of UBUNTU 8.04 LTS (I would pick Ubuntu because for some reason I found it easier to learn)

I wouldn't start with the virtual machines as of yet and then just have the same server. On the install it will ask you for the services you want to install.

Just start from their and as you become more familiar with it start changing things and adding Virtual Machines.
