I find using a router to be the best so far.

Since any unsolicited inbound connection is dropped by a router I wonder why you think you need a firewall at all. Do tell why along with which OS.

For example there are unpatched network vulnerabilities in Windows NT 4.0 SP6a but these are only a big worry if you are connecting directly to the Internet without a router.

So the OS matters. Run Linux if you want the best known protected network stack.

Have you heard of any exploit that would require more?

As to keeping your files secure, that’s easy. Make backups. If you have less than 2 backup copies your files at at risk.
