Win 2000 was a big whopper by microsoft. NT Systems are not suited to home users or small business. The system does not allow MANY applications/hardware that could change the system so someone else cannot harm your pc. BUT YOU may be the only user and you may want to change it. MSDOS does allow changes like making files unhidden so it is prevented.

Your best option, is to boot to the command prompt, and try running the DOS application from there.

If you still get the error, than the W2K version of a system file used by the DOS program is not compatible with your program.

Your work-around, is to copy the MSDOS files to the folder that has the DOS program, as most apps. look for files in the program folder first.

In Windows 95 and 98, you are able to create a DOS box that will run most DOS applications.
since I do not have a W2K machine, I do not know if W2K has a similar option.

If all else fails, you may need to set up the PC for dual-booting MSDOS and W2K.

As to the question in your question title;
A system file is any file that is part of the operating system.
ForMSDOS, this is most of the files in the DOS directory.
The same is true for Windows with the Windows folder and sub-folders.
For Windows, most of these files are .exe .ini .inf and .dll files.
