What is causing degrading connections vi

By gbs ·
What could be causing my modem connection speeds to drop dramatically?
Bell Atlantic says nothing is wrong, but my modem speeds have dropped
dramatically recently. What kinds of tester should I borrow to check out the line losses, etc.? What values do I need to check? What connections among the various lines in the house could be suspect? I do have two telephone lines, one local, one FX (foreign exchange). The fx line offers slightly better connection speeds, but only marginally. Computer connection from the upstairs bedroom office is much faster than the main connection from the first floor office.

From what you are telling me it doesn't sound like the modem, but for the heck of it, you may want to download the latest drivers. If that doesn't work, you may need your home lines tested. I recently had my lines in the house completely redone (over 1000 feet of bad cable found). My connection speed jumped from 26400 to 52000 overnight, which is what I'm connected at right now. Good luck.

Check out TechRepublic's Bruce Spenser column on modems at
http://www.techrepublic.com/article.jhtml?id=/column/r00220000320eje01.htm

Specifically, look at the paragraph on "Spiral of Death" (I think that's it).

Hope this helps.

Here's a weird solution/possible explainantion. Telephone lines are installed in a build by running cable from one plug box to the next. Each one a case of wire being cut, stripped, and joined to the next run. So, that's how many connection sources of possible problems you have to look at. A friend of mine had a similar problem. We found that one phone plug gang box, that was never used, was right next to a door that got a lot of use. Over time, the vibration had loosened the holding screws on the wires. I've even seen where ventilation/AC units in offices vibrated and loosen connections. Start by unscrewing the wall plates and checking the screws for tightness and the wires for contact.
Another source may be moisture getting to an old or frayed wire; whether it's in the attic or crawlspace. Then your looking at Answer #1.
Hope that helps.

The avobe answers pretty much tell the story. You may have a long run of cable from the location you have the low speeds at. The upstairs bedroom may be the start of a run for your phone lines and in turn have a shorter distance to travel to the junction box outside. This is a fairly common problem and can be fixed based on what you want to spend. You also have the option of looking into DSL or Cable ($40 to $50 a month) connections which will **** away anything you get from a standard modem.
