WHAT IS THE DARK WEB?

By JerseyJedi ·

The term “dark web” conjures up all sorts of images of hoodie-clad hackers sitting in the dark in front of a wall of monitors. What exactly is the Dark Web? Is there any reason for a law-abiding citizen to visit it or any danger it poses to those who haven’t been there?

While the previous replies aptly defined what the Dark Web is, I'll care to share what is usually in there. Since it's a place that cannot be easily accessed by everyone, you'd expect topics, themes and stuff there that you wouldn't usually find in a google search. And I guess it really can pose danger to others who can get easily swayed (teens are always at risk on this) but for curiosity's sake, it's a decent place to just look around.

Dark Net (or Darknet) is an umbrella term describing the portions of the Internet purposefully not open to public view.

The term originally described computers on ARPANET were hidden, programmed to receive messages but not respond to or acknowledge anything, thus remaining invisible, in the dark.

The term has in later usage incorporated services such as the dark web, which is an overlay network that can be accessed only with specific software, configurations, or authorization, often using non-standard communication protocols and ports. Types of dark webs include friend-to-friend networks (usually used for file sharing with a peer-to-peer connection) and privacy networks such as Tor.

The reciprocal term for an encrypted darknet is clearnet or surface web when referring to content indexable by search engines

I would not want to visit the dark web, unless it is a matter of life and death. Too much security risks and shady people.
