I was wondering what the difference between Ethernet (as we know it in our homes, businesses, etc.) is versus that of Metro Ethernet and MPLS? I’m not familiar with the latter two and was curious as to what exactly they are and how they work.

Metro Ethernet is a network based on the Ethernet standard that serves metropolitan areas via metropolitan area networks (MANs).

Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a network function that is offered as a service, but it is also a technology that an enterprise can install on its own routers.

MPLS typically costs more than Ethernet but less than T1 lines. Ethernet is typically more affordable than MPLS and it is best for interconnecting data centers.
