What makes my PC freeze up

By Judge Dread ·
I never had any trouble with my HP Scanjet 3200c or my PC freezing up for a perion of time and releasing for a period of time until after I went on-line for the first time and it has been doing that ever since then, so I uninstalled the software. Everything was fine after that. This also occured when I am in my word processor ..with software installed. The only thing I can think of is there has got to be a conflict with Internet Explorer and my Scanjet software..possible the drivers. Calling HP Suppport was a waste of time as my Scanjet is out of warranty and they want to charge me $25 to talk to tech suport with no guaranteed results. You can imagine what my answer to that was. I am at a loss as to what to do. If it is Internet Explorer alone what can I do do get all software/drivers, etc. references to it completely removed from at least my one PC so my scanner will available all the time.

While a software conflict is possible, I suspect that you have either registry problems, or insufficient resources.

My personal minimums for Windows are
128MB of RAM (196MB - 384MB preferred)
500MB of free hard drive space (2GB or more preferred)
CPU speed:
W95 100MHz
W98 300MHz
W2k/XP 550MHz

If you have less than 128MB of RAM, increasing your RAM will likely fix your problems.

Next, how old is your PC?
Over time, Windows builds up a lot of extra and useless data in the system registry.
2 years is about the longest you can go without needing to perform a very serious cleaning of the registry.
The most effective way to clean the registry, is to format the hard drive, and start over fresh.

Here is a good site for information on IE,

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/

There are instructions posted for removing several different versions of IE.

If you wish to try a different web browser, I suggest Mozilla.
www.mozilla.org

Mozilla does not take over your PC like both IE and Netscape do.

Oh, what software tool are you using to clean the registry?
regclean from Microsoft only repairs gross errors.
Both Norton WinDoctor, and Fix-It do a much better job.

What makes my PC freeze up

Every program freezes up when I install my scanner software ever since I first started surfing the "Net". I have also talked to several technicians and had my PC in a couple repair shops to diagnose it and they couldn't come up with an answer. Itdoesn't matter what program it is ...it will still freeze up until I uninstall the scanner software. I had Microsoft come up with a solution they sent me a gratis CD without Internet explorer on it. I formated my hard drive and installed the latest version of win 98 they sent ne when I was through adding my CD-ron installation software, etc. I installed the scanner software again...viola every thing runs smooth as glass. I was right after all and Microsoft was on that same thought train as well. I have another PC that I use for surfing the "Net" and I also Installed a CD-burner in the PC with out Internet Explorer. Now both Pc's have burners. I could have hooked the pcs together but I did not want to risk another conflict. Now everything is running fine. Now I can just simply grab the CD and access the saved scanned pictures or documents Ion any of my PCs. I appreciate your desire to help me in this problem I had. Thanks
