What makes my PC freeze up

By Judge Dread ·
ATTN: theChas. Thanks for your input but ram is not a problem. I have 256K and am good at keeping my registry clean of junk files. My PC is left on the nights maintenance is to be performed and it hasn't been too long since I formated my HD. Thekey issue here is...why does my pc freeze up like I said prviously when I am in an offline application like WordPereect and not connected to the Internet?. In addition to all the other things I have told you, I make use of my system's resourse meter and per chance I get low on resources I would get a prompt warning me so... as I used to get before I boosted my ram. What now. Oh one last point. Where I worked last they had a simular HP scanner connected to a Compaq and it didn't have any Internet Browser software on it......not a bit of problems???????
What now?. I seem to come up with darnedest things that even most PC dealer/repair stores can't even answer. Perhaps I have a little Gremlin running around inside my PC :-) I have anIdea and I am going to see if I can get it to work. I am weary of this mess. Hope you might come up with something if my idea doesn't work out.

What makes my PC freeze up

Hi,

I always start out with the most common answer.
If you want, you can keep this question open, and reject my answers with added comments until we get the problem resolved.

Now that we have verified resources, how about drivers?
Are you using the default Windows drivers for the motherboard?
Or, have you installed the latest version of the motherboard manufactures drivers?

Do any conflicts show up in device manager?

In device manager, right click on system, and you can look at IRQ and other resource assignments.
(this is from memory, and I'm on an XP box right now)
Is your modem or network card sharing resources with the USB ports?

If so, un-install the card, and move it to a different slot.
Many motherboards assignIRQs by slot location, and even if Windows does not use the default IRQ, there can still be conflicts. So, it might not hurt to move the card anyway.

Which version of Word Perfect? And, have you installed the patches from Corels web site?

Howabout Windows updates?

If you are using a network card, they have been known to go bad, and cause unusual problems.
Either try a different card, or run without the card for a few days.

I subscribed to both questions so that I can get back to you daily.

As I said, reject my answer, and post further details in your comments so that we can move this along.

What makes my PC freeze up

TheChas:

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I han gone through all the suggestions you had mentioned and that is why I turned to TechRepublic. It doesn't matter what program I am in the PC freezes up like I had said before. I even hookedup my scanner to another of my PCs and the results were the same. The are no conflicts anywhere in this PC as well. I still feel that IE Explorer and my scanner hardware and/or software are in conflict. I was thinking about formatting my other Pc's hardrive and install win 3.11 and my scanner's software and see what happens there but the main board is fried...so that Idea is on hold for a while. I haave a canon scanner I got from an insurance job and I may install the software for it and see what happens. If it works I post again as to the results. THanks for taking your time to assist.
