When is it a Broadband Connection.....

By gxmccull ·
I am currently running a P111 450 with 256mb RAM. I have just joined NTL Broadband on their 128 service. The max download speed i can get is 7kbps instead of the claimed 16kbps. An NTL technician visited and using the NTL Cable Modem via an ethernetlink from his laptop got 16kbps and said my prob was connecting via usb. I have tried connecting via a network card and changing to ethernet and still can only get 7kbps as a download......HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP Pleaseeeeeeeeeee

When is it a Broadband Connection.....

Don't know how much this will help.

I have used several test sites to check my DSL connection, and I get speed ratings from 300K to 600K.
My download speed IS site dependant, but averages around 88K.

I can get download rates of 5K with my 43.5K dial up connection.

If the connection meets the rated speed, (which apparently it does) then the next place to look is settings.
Start with the TCP/IP settings, then the DNS settings.
Compare your settings to the suggested settings for the ISP.

If you have full scale anti-virus, or firewall settings enabled, you may not have a fast enough CPU to keep up, and that may be what is slowing you down.

Also, make sure that you have plenty of free space on your hard drive, and that virtualmemory settings are not set too small.
(500MB of virtual memory is the MINIMUM that I recommend)
(you should try and have at least 1GB of free hard drive space)

First and foremost, what are you using for an OS for your computer? Certain operating systems are not configured to the maximum transmission units (MTU)... MTU ( Maximum Transmission Unit ) is the greatest amount of data that can be transferred in one physical frame on the network. If a packet that has a smaller MTU than the packet's frame length is sent, fragmentation will occur. For Ethernet, 1500 is the maximum, and recommended MTU. The unofficial MTU for SLIP servers is 1006. OS's such asWin 98, Win 2000, & Win XP are not configured properly to receive/send the MTU's... I suggest that you start here... http://www.speedguide.net/ and download the OS and registry tweaks for broadband performance... The broadband system that I maintain in Canada, averages 350 to 600 kb/sec on downloads, Hope this fixes your dilemna!

A superb site!!!!!!!!!!

Someone else suggested I download Tweak Master just b4 I got this note. Tweak Master did what it said on the box and now i'm getting downloads of 16kbps which is bang on for an NTLHome 128 service. Now I can upgrade to a 1mb service in confidence.
Vanquisher a personal thanks and I will visit the above site regularly.
