When plugged thumb drive it will point to network drive

By winzpink ·
Hi all,

I just bought HP notebook, but cannot use the thumb drive. Every time a thumb drive is plugged into the USB port, it will recognize it as G Drive but G drive is a map drive from the server and hence cannot read the thumb drive.

Un-map the network drive before you plug i=in the drive

Try this to rectify your Thumb drive issue..

Go to "disk management", scroll down the list until you see your thumb drive and right click on it and select another letter in the list, you might need to log off and then log back in for this to take affect.

Please post back if you have any more problems or questions.

Why This Happens

by TheChas In reply to When plugged thumb drive ...

This behavior is both normal and a pain.

The software for external drives does not recognize any drive letters that are mapped to network shares. It only looks for the next available hardware drive letter.

The best way to deal with this issue is to plan ahead when you set up network drive mappings. Leave a minimum of 3 open drive letters from the highest planned physical drive letter before you start assigning letters for mapped drives.
