Where should I begin as an IT Consultant?

By lacyda3rd ·
This may seem like a vague question. Lately I have been pondering opportunity of branching out as a small business IT Consultant. I am looking to start off with one or two clients to get my feet wet. Should I look to start off as a sole proprietor, LLC, etc? How do I go about obtaining the clients that I desire (marketing, advertising, etc). I am kind of looking for a guided hand if someone has any advice that they are willing to lend. Thanks.

If this is what you want to do, start attending local council meetings and other related get-togethers so you can meet some prospective clients. It would probably be best to start off with people you know personally so you can build a client base quickly. They will also be a lot more forgiving during your learning period.
Do some basic marketing like business cards, and get a proper email address and website if possible ( Make you look a lot more professional.
Wouldn't hurt to do a certification or two as well, just to have something to show off.
