IBM thinkpads that have problems with the video usually have one of two solutions (assuming that you have correctly configured the video drivers and screen resolution);

1. Either the display connector under the keyboard is not seated- go to IBM'sweb site and find the disassembly manual for your model, then you remove two screws from the back, remove the battery, remove the keyboard, remove a plastic insulator, and then reseat the connector.

2. The display itself has a problem and the unit needs to be returned to IBM for repair.

Try upgrading the BIOS to the latest revision for your specific model of ThinkPad and OS.

I recently saw a ThinkPad R32 with Win2000 boot to white screen whenever the hdd was in that machine. The hdd would work fine another R32. Systemboard, LCD, docking station all checked fine. Upgraded BIOS and the ThinkPad has been fine since.
