Yesterday there was a thread, started by an old member, regarding his dislike for all the support being given Tigger’s 3 day event in the fight against breast cancer. Obviously, in retrospect, he must have been absent from TR for some time because some of his comments indicated he wasn’t aware that the TR’s format has been somewhat changed over the last year, or so but this wasn’t initially clear to the rest of us. As a result most regulars were outraged by the somewhat ignorant, insensitive comments being made and rushed forth to defend, our friend Tigger and her cause. Needless to say the originator was deemed a troll and a flame war ensued.
We’ve had many of these incidents, several times before and have never, at least to my memory, had a whole thread pulled unless the decent into obscenity was truly egregious and/or pornographic in nature. Commercialism is and has always been unacceptable. No argument!!! But to pull that thread??? Why??? What was the point??? It was already approaching 300 posts the last time I saw it. What harm was being caused??? Were Tammy’s delicate little feelings or sensibilities being hurt??? Was she being personally attacked???
Basically it was a bunch of members, myself included, having fun flaming at a supposed troll and demonstrating support for a friend. Under previous “moderators” the thread would still be running, although some of the more heavy duty obscenity might be Xed out or deleted.
In the past we would occasionally be warned when we were getting too rambunctious and to tone it down. Sometimes it became a bit of a running joke a la “Beth and her whip” but never were we so tightly censored as we have been since Tammy has taken over. She asked for our patience while she became aclimated and we were, but its been some time now and in that time a lot of the fun element has been deleted from TR since she has arrived on the scene. Was she put in place to kill off Off-topic??? If that is the case she is bound to succeed at the rate she is proceeding. Will Off-topic be able to survive her??? For that matter, will TR, if Off-topic is killed off??? I for one, am not too sure because since Tammy has arrived free speach, as limited or unlimited as it was, is rapidly becoming a distant memory here on TR.
Yes, some form of control must be maintained but why does it have to be so heavy handed and obviously centered on being so PC. [b][i]Editing, yes; Bluenosed censorship, a very definite [u]NO!!![/b][/i][/u]
