Why doesn't Windows Update work IE 6?

By PCTech26 ·
I have a few computers that are having a problem with Windows Update. I am able to access the Windows Update website, and everything works until I get to 'Install Now'. I click on 'Install Now' and the dialog box pops up ready to download the updates. The problem is it stops, and nothing downloads or installs. I cancel and I get the following message to be sent to Microsoft.

********************************************
Error details
Internet Explorer has encountered an internal error.
Error signature
AppName: iexplorer.exe AppVer: 5.51.4801.2300 ModName: rpcrt4.dll ModVer: 4.71.2900.2 Offset: 00040894

********************************************

This problem is on computers that has had IE 6 installed, and run on a Windows 98 OS.

Why doesn't Windows Update work IE 6?

The app name that the error is encountering is on IE 5.5...

I suggest that you uninstall IE 5.5 and 6.0 and then reboot and reinstall the one you want to use.

I uninstalled IE 6, and now I would like to uninstall IE 5.5. Problem! Under Add/Remove Programs, there is no IE 5.5 displayed to remove it.

Do you have a suggestion on how to remove IE 5.5 without using Add/Remove Program.

Try this first; Open an IE browser>Tools>Internet Options>Settings>View Objects>Highlight what should be the top Active X control program, the "CV3 Class" object and click the Delete Key, click yes, then Restart the puter and try Windows Update again and allow the Controls to re-install. Click yes for all trust notices. Then try the update again. Failing that try the next step listed below.

Use the System File Checker utility found in; Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information>Tools>System File Checker.

Then use the Extract a file and your OS (guessing Win98 or 98SE as you didn't say?-Info is King!) CD, Extract the file rpcrt4.dll from the CD to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM , as it would seem yours is corrupted or the signature is somehow messed up. Then try the update to IE6 again. Do replace that CV3 Class Control though.

Is there any IE listed in the Add/Remove programs listing? If so, just highlight it first, then click remove and you should then first click "Repair", then try the update, if that still fails, then try the revert option, then try the update again (you can also choose Add A Component Option and choose all that you might want, do you have the minimum of Active X 8.0 installed?)

Restart after every try of anything, and close programs (especially your AV) before attempting the updates and changes.

If all else fails, come back here and update as I have IE 5.0 on CD (old college course handout), and could send it as a last resort on loan, has gotten me past the hump before, then easy update and back in business.

I tried everything that you suggested, and nothing has worked. All computers that have this problem have Windows 98 SE, and has had IE 6 installed.

I have searched on everything dealing with rpcrt4.dll. I think I am going to uninstall IE 6 again, and then manually uninstall IE 5.5. Then try to install IE 6. I appreciate all of your suggestions.

you have a conflict between IE 5.51 and IE 6.
The only solution is to delete 5.51 and re-install IE6, that you can do over the existing IE 6. The install process will check for exisiting IE 6 files and use them if possible. I have IE 6
(and OUTLOOK 6 comes with it) installed and it is updated automatically when you run Windows update.

Good luck.

Ok, try this link and follow the RPCRT4.DLL trail bro.;

(remove any spaces in the above link) And the 4th column is the location of the error link Rpcrt4.dll.

That trail will lead you to this KB article about replacing the Schannel.dll file.

Good Luck.

I just forced a corruption of the Schannel.dll on a test machine and also got the same error you did, when I used the solution of extraction and replacement of the Schannel.dll from my setup disk of the OS like it was called out in the above KB article, I was right back in normal business & routine in minutes.
