Why is RAM memory being sapped?

By benrock ·
I started with 128mb of RAM running my Win98 with a Celuron 400 processor. While running Ms outlook I kept running out of memory. So I went to 384mb of RAM, But I am still running out of memory. For example I have been on line about 45 minutes now, and my little RAM program is showing I only have 144mb free. I have tried closing as many startup programs as I can and still I keep running out of memory. I am not sure how to look for a memory leak or stop one, if that is the problem. Hopefully some one can shed some light on this issue for me.

I realize you have probably already done this, but have you run a virus checker?

You may have inadvertently picked up spywaer from a free app, website or game.
Spyware will run in th ebackground and either track your surfing habits or present pop-up advertising as you surf.
Before you say your system is free of spyware (most people think they are clean or would know), try running a copy of lavasoft's adaware.

Good luck

Memory Leak

My W98 box has the same problem.

It started when I (mistakenly) updated to IE6.
IE6 SP1 made it even worse.

I have no fix for a memory leak other than to wipe the drive (at least the root and Windows folders) and perform a fresh install of Windows and software.

Memory managers help, but can slow down Windows.
