Why is VPN so slow when both connections are 9megabits ?

Hi

I’m running a Windows Server 2003 box at work with a 9 megabit connection (according to speedtest.net).

I’m running windows XP pro at home on my laptop and also have a 9 megabit cable connection.

when I connect directly to the internet on either computer I get really good transfer speeds. However, when I connect to my office through VPN from my home and run speedtest I only get about 1/10th of the speed. It is also very slow to open/transfer files etc. VPN is PPTP

I’m going through a Netgear router at work with VPN passthrough. My router at home is also netgear.

Any ideas why this is so slow would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Liam
