Will not load OS,WIN98 SE

by aqmike In reply to Will not load OS,WIN98 SE

I have recently had a similar problem with a clients computer. It ended up taking out the hard drive and putting it into a computer that I new was working well and loading the OS from there and then transplanting it back into the original computer. If you don't have the ability to do this, try checking the memory. You may have some bad memory that is causing problems with the motherboard and causing you to be unable to complete an installation. Hope this helps.

Try removing the hard drive and having it as the slave on another pc. Then format it and try to load windows from there.........

Check the Disk you mentioned the disk as being Windows 98 Plus disk which is not a Operating System disk

Run scandisk form dos mode to check the drive for errors

Check to make sure that drive is not compressed

Try running the installation with minimum hardware installed on the system

You did not mention any errors that may come up during the installation process

Open the caase and take some of the memory out to see if this is causing a problem, memory module may be bad,you will then need to insert each stick to see which is the bad memory

This may sound far fetched but had similar problems all attributed to bad memory. Try swapping memory

I have had numerous problems installing Windows 98 onto several systems.

Start by stripping the system down to the minimum.
Remove all plug in cards, and un-needed removeable drives.
Then, in BIOS settings, disable USB, and any other built in devices (other than the comm and parallel ports (if you plan to use them)).

If you still have problems, then try different RAM.

Install the chipset and video drivers before plugging in the other cards, and enable / plug in cards 1 per boot.

I'm with Chas. One more thing ( this has happened to me ). Look in BIOS and disable antivirus protection.

In addition to previous answers, it is good to keep in mind that WIN98 SE is an upgrade on the original WIN98... Meaning if you tried to install WIN98 SE on a clean hard drive, it may not run. According to what I've heard, you need to have the original WIN98 loaded on there first...THEN proceed to loading WIN98 SE. (with original WIN98 already on there at time of upgrade) I had a friend with this problem and she took this advice and it worked for her, so maybe it will work for you. That's assuming you have the original WIN98 software to begin with. Otherwise, just dump it and go for WIN ME!

I've seen this type of problem caused by bad memory. Install freezes, file cannot be read from CD, corrupt files etc. If you have the option try running the memory at a lower speed. A successful install at a lower speed could indicate off spec RAM.

If none of the previous answers help, you could try updating the BIOS.
